Overview

The arXiv MCP Server provides AI assistants with access to one of the world's most important open-access research repositories. With over 2 million scholarly papers across physics, mathematics, computer science, quantitative biology, finance, and statistics, arXiv is the primary platform for sharing cutting-edge research. This server enables AI models to search papers, read abstracts, access metadata, and retrieve LaTeX source.

Community MCP Server:

Integrates with the official arXiv API for paper search and metadata retrieval

Detailed Usage

search_papersβ–Ά

Searches arXiv by query, categories, date range, and sort order; returns compact results with abstract snippets by default.

get_abstractβ–Ά

Fetches metadata and the abstract for one arXiv ID without downloading the paper.

download_paperβ–Ά

Downloads and converts a paper to local Markdown; content is bounded to 12,000 characters by default.

read_paperβ–Ά

Reads locally stored paper content, paging with start and max_chars.

get_paper_latexβ–Ά

Retrieves bounded author-submitted LaTeX from the arXiv source archive.

citation_graphβ–Ά

Fetches references and citing papers through the Semantic Scholar API.

Installation

The server is published on PyPI as arxiv-mcp-server; run it with uvx:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "arxiv": {
      "type": "stdio",
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": ["arxiv-mcp-server"]
    }
  }
}

Papers are stored in ~/.arxiv-mcp-server/papers by default. Add "--storage-path", "/absolute/path/to/papers" to args to change it. An unrelated npm package uses the same name, so do not install this server with npm, pnpm, or npx arxiv-mcp-server.

Use Cases

Literature Discovery

Ask AI to find the most relevant papers on any research topic with detailed summaries.

Research Tracking

Monitor new papers from specific authors or categories to stay current in your field.

Literature Review

Gather and summarize papers for comprehensive literature reviews on any topic.

Citation Analysis

Find highly cited papers, track research trends, and identify influential works in a field.
